Using 1st gear is particularly important when driving a school bus, especially in circumstances involving challenging terrain or heavy loads. This gear provides the necessary torque and power for starting from a complete stop or moving uphill, allowing the vehicle to gain momentum gradually without straining the engine.

In heavy load scenarios, such as when the bus is filled with passengers, the increased weight means that more power is needed to initiate movement and maintain control. Engaging 1st gear helps prevent the bus from stalling and ensures that the driver can manage acceleration safely. When navigating steep inclines or uneven surfaces, the lower gear ratio of 1st gear also enhances traction, reducing the chances of wheel slip.

Other gears, such as neutral, 2nd, or 3rd, would not provide the necessary power and control under these conditions. Neutral, for instance, would disengage the transmission and prevent the bus from moving, while higher gears like 2nd or 3rd are designed for increased speed rather than the low-end torque needed in challenging situations.
